Online Gambling Industry in New Zealand

New Zealand does not allow the organization of online casinos domestically. Players can lawfully play in international institutions whose servers are located abroad. Besides, New Zealanders are allowed to register at certain gambling companies and Kiwis’ winnings are exempt from income taxes.

NZ players prefer to play slots, lotteries and sports bets. Most of all they bet on rugby, cricket, football and netball.

New Zealand does not statistics on income, but on the amount of money spent by players. This is equivalent to the income of gambling establishments.

In total, the players spent USD 1.47 billion. This amount includes:

horse racing sweepstakes (TAB) – USD 229 million;
lotteries – USD 295 million;
slot machines outside the casino – 576 million;
casino – 371 million

New Zealand Gambling Demographics
According to the Gambling and Addictions Research Center, the majority of New Zealanders – 85% – prefer to organize games as a way to raise money for worthy goals. Also, most consider gambling a business or a legal way to increase state revenue.

Only one third of citizens are dissatisfied with how gambling revenue is distributed – either out of ignorance of the process, or out of personal conviction against the actual gambling business.

Popular games
41% of New Zealanders and Australians play more often than once a week. Only 10% of players over 18 play every week. Among them, men, players aged 55-64 and Maori are more represented. On average, a player spends USD 41 per month. Men spend more than women. Only 10% of the adult population is at risk. 30% of players play the lottery. Favorite lottery – Lotto, it is in it that most residents play with such frequency.

The half of Kiwis are satisfied with the number of locations where they can play gambling. Approximately 41% think that there are too many gambling sites. It is noteworthy that it is precisely those people who have a gambling addiction who are unhappy.

The most undesirable forms of gambling are electronic gaming machines and online gambling in foreign casinos.

Gambling Addiction Issues
Compared to other countries, New Zealand has a low level of gambling addiction.

Moreover, the percentage interestingly correlates with the number of slot machines:

1991 – the number of machines is 6,273 – the percentage of addicted players was 1.2% of the total population;
2000 – the number of machines is 12 201 – the percentage of ludomania was 0.5%.
That is, as the number of slot machines grows, the dependence decreases. But then, during 2007-2016, there is no correlation: the number of avid players does not depend on the number of slot machines in the country.
